Happy to have that week behind me. It was tough to motivate for the King Pine Triathlon on Saturday since I've only been focusing on running and was STILL SKIING this week. Having a couple friends who were competing in the spring stay with us over the weekend helped a little to pull me back into the race mindset but I knew that although I'm incredibly fit right now, I'm not "tri fit". There will be a race report for the KP Tri so I'll just go into this week's highlights.
Skiing: I can safely say that I've shut it down for the spring. On Wednesday I met up with my friend CJ to ski in the Great Gulf one last time. I met up with him at the base of the Cog and we skied Airplane Gully, snowfields, then dropped into Batman Gully (aptly named since it holds snow the longest and will display a "bat signal" reminding you of winter - thanks for that one Jonathan). It was a slog to hike down again but I was able to use the drone for some of the video and it was an awesome day up there yet again. Here's the edit:
Running: A good week for running - decent miles on the front and back end with a little recovery in the middle. The KP Tri run went really well compared to my split last year. I was able to shave off 17s/mi and got in a strong effort. On Sunday, Hilary and I ran up to Flat Mountain Pond then hiked Sandwich Dome and ran back down. That was 3+ hours on the feet which made for an excellent long run. This week I'm heading back to the basics with a 60+ mile week prepping for a couple more road races before focusing on my Unsupported 48 project.
Bike / Swim: I'm essentially done with biking until August but I'd like to get in a couple hour rides each week for cross-training. And the swim. I thought I could race off ZERO training this weekend and maybe just be a couple minutes slower but I struggled. I had a minor freakout a couple minutes in and had to slow down and relax. My breathing was off and an episode like that can ruin your day but I kept it together and just took my time, 4:20 slower than the previous year. Lesson learned! I'll also be swimming a couple times per week as cross-training but only when it's warm out.
