Monday: Off. AM: Monday group ride (37mi) and PM swim (0.8mi)
Tuesday: 7 miles. Whitaker Woods Week 5 - ran well coming off LMR. Battled Peter Howe to the finish where he edged me out by a second.
Wednesday: 9.7 miles. Up Huntington / Down Tuckerman (see video below). Tried to take it easy but nothing easy about this route. Felt really good to get back on the trails but also a reminder about how much work I'll have to put in to get back in "trail shape".
Thursday: 7.7 miles. Recovery run, feeling beat down.
Friday: 5 miles. FNV6. Put in 2.7k vert setting, previewing, and videoing. Legs just can't catch a break.
Saturday: 10 miles. Testing out some gear before next weekend. Wanted to use an ice bandanna and my garmin inreach mini. Turns out there will be timing at the VT 100 but I'll still have my crew drop waypoints at the aid stations.
Sunday: 4.5 miles. Shake out the legs before hiking up to Crag Camp with friends.
Total: 42 miles // 9.7k' + 7.2k' (hiking / biking).
Taper Week 1 of 2. Not your traditional taper but what I've learned about any training goal is be flexible. Running around the ravines probably wasn't the best option 10 days out but it felt really good to be back on trails. Since backing down my long runs to prevent this ankle tendonitis from blowing up, I've continued to push hard with shorter efforts like the mountain races, FNV, and WW series.
It's hard to gauge what my 100 mile goal time should be but I'll try to pace 9 min/mi and adjust from there. It's going to be tough and the warm weather isn't going to do me any favors. Goals: Pace for 17hrs and see what happens. That's an ambitious goal for sure but on a course like this I don't think it's out of the question. If/when the wheels fall off then I just need to get it done however possible and collect those UTMB points. It has been a long time since I've been deep in the hurt locker (VT50) and I'm excited to get back to that place.
